Today's Forecast
Weather Discussion: An 'atmospheric river' remains pointed at California this morning as a large trough across the Gulf of Alaska holds firm. A slight break in the action is expected this afternoon (or at least less widespread precipitation) as the next & last storm, in the storm series, develops offshore. This cold front promises to be another potent system. Already strong winds will increase further this evening and early tonight as heavy rain develops across the North Coast and pushes inland. Widespread heavy rain (higher terrain snow) and strong southwesterly winds will plague the Lake Tahoe Basin after midnight although snow levels are expected to rise a little at first. Moderate to heavy rain & snow will continue through the morning/afternoon hours across the entire region before finally winding down in the evening. New snowfall amounts (wet snow) for locations above ~7500ft could near 2-4ft. Snow levels are expected to drop later tomorrow which may bring a mix of rain/snow back down to lake level locations but significant accumulations are not expected, especially since the ground will be so saturated with several inches of rain. Once the system passes Sunday night, high pressure will build which will finally create a dry day for Monday. By Tuesday however, the next mild Pacific frontal system is forecast to migrate into the North State returning some light rain/snow to the region by the late afternoon. Amounts shouldn't end up too much with most of the precip falling near the coast and to the north. Some lingering showers are possible into Wednesday but by Thurs/Fri, high pressure over the state should help to bring several dry days to the Sierra. Stay Thirsty, Coop

The data for this real-time snow and weather report is obtained directly from the snow weather plots at Kirkwood Mountain Resort and the surrounding areas. Snow totals and snow accumulation are consistently 15 to 20% more than reported as a result of wind, micro squalls and snow loading. Weather patterns at Kirkwood Mountain Resort are exceedingly difficult to predict – when venturing into the mountain, be prepared for rapid, dramatic weather changes.
